Help with Reimbursement

If you are experiencing difficulty getting reimbursed for your claim, call the number on the back of your card. Let them know that the care you received was a preventative service and it was coded as such, and remind them that this service must be covered under the Affordable Care Act.

Here are some additional facts to support your claim:

  • From the New Benefits for Breastfeeding Moms: Facts and Tools to Understand Your Coverage under the Health Care Law Tool Kit: "COMPREHENSIVE LACTATION SUPPORT AND COUNSELING - The health care law requires all new health plans to cover “comprehensive prenatal and postnatal lactation support [and] counseling.” This means that breastfeeding mothers have health insurance coverage for lactation counseling without cost-sharing for as long as they are breastfeeding. Lactation consultants are trained specialists who work with women to help them begin and continue to breastfeed. Health insurers must cover such consultations without cost-sharing, but can require consumers to see only the providers on their list, called “in-network providers,” or impose other requirements on coverage.

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that all babies be breastfed for at least one year. (PEDIATRICS Vol. 115 No. 2 February 2005, pp. 496-506).

  • When breastfeeding difficulties occur, the AAP recommends that mothers and babies be seen by an IBCLC.

  • The AAP further recommends that third party insurance reimbursements be made for such IBCLC services.

  • Extensive research over many decades has proven that NOT breastfeeding results in significantly higher healthcare costs as a result of higher rates of maternal and child illness and disease.  For this reason, the AAP recommendation for insurance reimbursements for IBCLC services is a cost saving measure to insurance companies.
